The Mother Tongue Principle
CTS follows a well-respected rule within the translation industry called the Mother Tongue Principle, also known as the Native Tongue Principle. It states that professional translators should only translate into their native language as it produces better quality translations.
Under this rule, a native speaker of English is allowed, for example, to translate from Chinese to English but not the other way around. This is because native speakers possess a more extensive vocabulary and will have a better grasp of the rules of grammar. They also have a perfect understanding of their own culture, which is necessary to produce translations that are idiomatic, technically correct, and fluent to read.
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
At CTS, we have seen first-hand that there are many challenges regarding translations between Chinese and English. However, the greatest difficulty isn’t necessarily finding the correct terminology or applying the correct grammar but overcoming the massive cultural gap.
To produce a high-quality translation, a translator must transform the way they think so that they are on the same page as the original author.
They must also have a deep understanding of both cultures and the ability to follow cultural thinking habits. This is one of the factors which separates an average translation from a good one.
